The ACCESS Health Primary Care Research Project reviewed and summarized information on the state of primary care delivery in India and highlighted good practice initiatives. ACCESS Health uses this data to work with both public and private providers to design effective primary healthcare systems.

The ACCESS Health India team conducted a literature review, followed by interviews and visits with fifteen public and private healthcare organizations. We organized the literature review around the idea that a well functioning primary care system is built on four pillars: service delivery, sound finance, community engagement, and good governance.

Our conclusions are that good governance entails coherent decision making and active community involvement. Good service delivery includes a focus on continuity of care and a focus on prevention. An effective interface with the community includes a feeling of ownership by the community and accountablity. Successful finance requires making sure that available finance is equitable and cost effective.

The ACCESS Health Primary Care Research Project was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
